Whether you call it Columbus or Ninth Avenue, this stretch of NYC’s Upper West Side is a paradise for those who take their fashion shopping seriously. If you live in an apartment in this salubrious neighborhood, you’re likely a regular visitor. But if you’re not sure exactly where to start, here are some tips.
AG Adriano Goldschmied | 305 Columbus Avenue
For designer denim, look no further than AG Adriano Goldschmied, home of Italian-style jeans cut in more ways than you knew existed from Skinny and Cigarette to Boot Cut and Boyfriend. Denim aside, you can refresh your wardrobe with natty corduroy pants, chic silk blouses, and knitwear to keep you warm (while looking cool) this fall and winter. Look out, too, for exclusive AG Adriano Goldschmied collections such as Made in Italy and Alexa Chung for AG.
Gas Bijoux | 189 Columbus Avenue
Described as a slice of Saint-Tropez in NYC, Gas Bijoux is where to head when you’re looking for some added sparkle. Frenchman André Gas’s jewelry boutique will fit you out with Native American-style necklaces, gold Scaramouche earrings, duality serti rings, or even gleaming bracelets shaped like cobras. In fact, you’ll find jewelry to match just about any outfit or occasion. The boutique itself is a gem as well, ebbing as it does with the scent of rare perfumes while it pulsates with classic Parisian ditties. You’ll leave Gas Bijoux feeling like you’ve been on vacation.
Only Hearts | 386 Columbus Avenue
Only Hearts began as an Upper West Side emporium for all things heart-shaped from lockets and jewelry boxes to clothes and gifts, and quickly gained renown as a haven for hopeless romantics. In its current incarnation, Only Hearts specializes in intimate apparel and remains a neighborhood treasure. Step inside for everything from bikinis, boxers, and garters to robes, kimonos, camisoles, crop tops, and leggings. Products here are made in town, allowing you to wear a piece of NYC wherever you go.
bocnyc | 410 Columbus Avenue
You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d died and gone to heaven; the shoes, bags, clothes, and accessories galore make the shelves and rails of bocnyc positively groan. Designers on display include California Tailor, Maison Kitsuné, Skull Cashmere, Daniel Wellington, and Thakoon Addition. In fact, if there weren’t so many other tempting stores nearby, you could easily use bocnyc as your one-stop shop. And if you feel overwhelmed by the broad selection of fashion items on offer, a friendly assistant is always on hand to serve up some pointers.
